The USKFI recently sent a team to take part in the KUGB’s National Championships in the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham. This was the first time an Irish organisation had been invited to take part fully in this event and there was great excitement from those squad members chosen to compete. The event, which is now in its 44th year, comprised competitors from all over the KUGB’s clubs in the U.K. and is the major event on the KUGB’s calendar. The USKFI competitors performed exceptionally well with most competitors making it through several of the elimination rounds and several were tantalisingly close to meeting the seeded competitors before the finals. Joseph O’Hara fought incredibly well throughout the elimination rounds to make it through to the finals. In the finals he faced a seasoned competitor and showed great spirit and determination to come away with silver. His sister Ruth also stormed her way through the eliminations and was very unlucky not to secure a place in the finals, coming Joint Third in the Girls’ 10-11 Years Kumite.

The USKFI would like to extend their warmest thanks to the KUGB for inviting them to take part in their national competitions from now on. The links between the two organisations have become even closer throughout the years and the USKFI is delighted to be associated with such a major competition as the KUGB National Championships.
