Scotland was the latest destination for seven members of the USKF as they travelled over for an intensive training weekend with Sensei Frank Brennan, 7th Dan. First stop on Friday evening was a two-hour course hosted by Largs Karate Club, on Scotland’s west coast. Sensei was delighted to see the USKF contingent at the course, and proceeded to give an excellent class, finished off with detailed study of the Kata Bassai Sho. After a well-deserved meal on the Largs seafront, the group headed to Glasgow to their hotel, to relax and prepare themselves for an intensive Saturday of training.
Gourock Karate club was the host for the next 1 ½ hour course on Saturday morning. The Gourock club has been in existence for 24 years and Sensei has been regular grading examiner to the club for over 20 years. There was an electric atmosphere throughout the session and Sensei provided the students with another superb class, finished off by kata Chinte for the senior grades. There was just enough time for lunch and a brief rest before driving to Kirkintilloch, near Glasgow, for the afternoon course. A much more varied range of grades led to Sensei working primarily on aspects of khion, with principles that could also be applied to other aspects of karate training. The senior grades finished the class with a detailed analysis of kata Jiin.
On Sunday morning the group left their hotel early and travelled northeast to Takashuko Karate club, in Dunfermline. The first session began shortly after 11am and was an intensive class, with some unusual kihon combinations, designed to get people out of their comfort zones. The class ended with kata Jion. After a short break for the club grading, the last course of the weekend was a black and brown belt course in the same dojo. The course contained a mixture of khion combinations, followed by putting the techniques of the weekend into practice through partner work. The higher grades ended the weekend’s training with kata Gojushio Sho. Sensei Brennan, as usual, pushed students further than they could mange themselves, without allowing them to lose the details of their techniques. Principles were emphasised that remained a theme for the entire weekend, allowing students to develop further with each class.

A late flight back on Sunday allowed the USKF karateka to travel into Edinburgh city centre after training to take in some of the sights, including the stunning Edinburgh Castle. The USKF would like to thank the following KUGB Scotland club instructors for their excellent hospitality over the weekend: Mark McKinlay and Gordon McKay of Largs Karate Club, David Gillis of Gourock Karate Club, Gordon Mathie of Takashuko, Dunfermline and, in particular, Barbara Casey of Glasgow Karate Academy.
