Sensei Frank Brennan, 7th Dan, returned at the weekend once again to instruct at the USKFI's brown and black belt course. The course, totalling 3½ hours spread over an afternoon, was open to all shotokan karateka and the USKFI was delighted to welcome karateka from different organisations to the event.
Sensei Brennan began the course after the warmup with kihon punching combinations with the emphasis on timing, hikete and correct hip rotation and execution of each technique. After this, he moved on to partner combinations with various defences against the geri attacks used most commonly in jiyu ippon kumite. To finish the first class, Sensei instructed the class on kata Jion for black belts and Heian Godan for the Kyu grades.
After a short break, the second class began with the kata Kanku Sho for Nidans and above, while Shodans continuted with Niju Shio and brown belts Bassai Dai. Sensei spent time with each group of students working on timing and sequencing of the kata as well as individual moves. The senior Dan grades then studied kata Meikio before the class perfomed all the katas of the day at full speed and power. Sensei Brennan finished the day off with some vigorous partner work which uplifted an already electrifying atmosphere in the dojo.
There were approximately 70 karateka in attandance at the course with many training at both classes. The USKFI looks forward to having Sensei Brennan over again on September 19th.
